Visiting Napier is like stepping again in time. Town’s central enterprise district is dwelling to dozens of authentic buildings and shopfronts that exemplify the important thing types of the Artwork Deco motion.

Napier was devastated by an earthquake in 1931, which resulted within the demise of over 250 residents. From this tragedy, a brand new imaginative and prescient for town emerged.

As town was rebuilt after the earthquake, the buildings within the central enterprise district have been designed within the standard architectural fashion of the time, often called Moderne, later termed Artwork Deco. Due to the efforts of the Artwork Deco Belief, many of those buildings have been preserved and restored. Queen Elizabeth II stayed on the Masonic Resort in Napier, and Prince Edward VIII, who later abdicated the throne, spent three months within the metropolis.
